CAPCCAT searches for the presence of CAS Registration Number on/in any of:
-
the Domestic Substances List (DSL)
-
the Non-Domestic Substances List (NDSL)
-
the list of substances approved under the Food and Drugs Act (F&DA) and in commerce between '84 and '86, and which are therefore eligible for listing on the DSL (FDA-DSL)
-
the list of substances approved under the F&DA and in commerce between '87 and '01 - the In-Commerce List (ICL)
-
a Significant New Activity Notice (SNAc)
-
a Ministerial Condition (MC)
-
a Prohibition
-
Schedule 1 'List of Toxic Substances'
-
the priorities identified by the categorization of the DSL (CatDSL)
-
other human health priorities identified by Health Canada during the categorization of the DSL which did not meet the categorization criteria
-
the list of substances currently scheduled for deletion from the DSL
In addition, if your substance does not have a CASRN (for example: Fragrance), CAPCCAT will search the ICL by substance name or partial name to verify whether the substance is on the list. Currently, the only Canadian list that lists substances by name is the ICL.

Canadian regulatory inventories are composed primarily of CASRNs. The DSL, and NDSL do not list substances by name. These must be searched using a CASRN. Although the CatDSL and FDA-DSL list substances by CASRN and name, they must be searched by CASRN within CAPCCAT. The ICL is composed of several distinct lists, two of which are listings of substances by name only. These lists can be searched by entering a substance name or partial name. The results of such a search are only representative of the inclusion of the search term(s) in those particular lists. The results may not be representative of the complete compliance status of the substance.

CAPCCAT is not currently configured to provide comprehensive compliance assessment and management information related to biochemicals and biopolymers. If the substance has been assigned a CASRN, CAPCCAT can identify whether it is listed in any of the Canadian regulatory inventories or if any risk management measures have been imposed on such a substance. If the substance has been assigned an Enzyme Commission (EC) number, CAPCCAT cannot currently verify its presence in any regulatory instrument. CAPCCAT can identify the Schedule required for notification of a new chemical or polymer, but does not identify the additional Schedule that is required for biochemicals and biopolymers.

Yes, CAPCCAT does assess the complianc status of the substance under the US Toxic Substances Control Act by screening the TSCA Inventory automatically, every time a search is conducted. CAPCCAT does not currently assess the compliance status of the substance in any other international jurisdictions. However, we have provided links to the Australian and European databases with CAPCCAT for your ease of reference. In addition, we are always looking for ways to improve the value that CAPCCAT provides. If there are additional features that you would appreciate from CAPCCAT, please let us know by filling in the "Feedback" box on the Contact Us page.

Yes, CAPCCAT does allow you to save searches against a customized name. When you choose to save a search you may assign any name to the search that you wish and use that name to conduct a search on the same substances at a later date. This makes it easy to manage the substances associated with specific products.

If you wish, you may save any entered CASRN in CAPCCAT and choose to automatically be notified by email when any change occurs to the regulatory status of that substance. CAPCCAT will save the regulatory compliance status of the substance on the day you enter it. This includes the listing of the substance on any inventory and the presence of the substance in any published CASRN-specific risk management measure notice. Every day CAPCCAT downloads the inventories and risk management measure notices anew and screens your substance against the newly downloaded information. If there are any changes, CAPCCAT will send you an email that will display the substance's previous compliance assessment and the updated assessment. For example, if your substance was not previously listed on the NDSL, but was added within the last day, CAPCCAT will detect a change in the compliance status of the substance and will send you an email informing you of the change.
This function saves considerable time and can be used as a strategic tool as well. Substances that are identified as being of interest, or potential commercial value, can be saved in CAPCCAT and scheduled for automatic updating. Changes to the status of the substance that affect the regulatory requirements related to the manufacture or import of the substance will automatically be sent to you. In this manner, you can best take advantage of such changes.

There are two types of information that CAPCCAT can store: 1) Inventory Search Resutls; and 2) Schedule Determinations for Substances with CASRNS.
-
Inventory Search Results
An inventory search will search for the presence of the CASRN on any regulatory inventory or in any regulatory risk management measures. The presence or absence of the CASRN in each of these is indicated to the user in a tabular format, and if desired, can be saved.
If the results are saved then the user can perform 2 further activities. They can choose to enable the "Autoupdate" function. For further information about the automatic updating function, click here. The user also has the option of returning to CAPCCAT and conducting another search using the saved CASRN or based on the date the search was conducted. In this case, CAPCCAT only uses the date of the search as a filter to select specific CASRNs, and uses the saved CASRNs in the same way it uses newly entered CASRNs, to conduct a new search. For further information on conducting a search in CAPCCAT, click here.

Schedule Determinations for Substances with CASRNs
The Schedule determination module allows the user to answer specific questions which are critical to the determination of the notification schedule which must be submitted prior to the import or manufacture of more than a specified volume of a substance. The module produces an output which summarizes the information which was critical to the determination of the notification Schedule, including the CASRN of the substance, and the required Schedule. If desired, this output may be saved. If the output is saved then the users can return to CAPCCAT at a later date and retrieve the same output by selecting the associated CASRN in the "Previous Searches" module.
CAPCCAT also contains a module for Schedule Determination of a hypothetical substance. This module was created for the purposes of strategic planning when the CASRN is unknown. The results of this module cannot be saved because there is no CASRN with which to link the output.
